    Description

URUGUAY is known for its absolutely rich Soccer history. Nobody can explain how a tiny country with only roughly 180,000 km2 and with about 3,000,000 inhabitants has given this sport so many glories.
Here we have a clear example of one of such moments. We are offering now a unique Soccer history item.
This Club Atlético Peñarol pennant was hand signed by most members of the 1965 sub-Champions of Copa Libertadores of America (Independiente of Argentina was that year the champion). Only a year later Peñarol became Champion of America (4-2 over River Plate of Argentina) and World Champion of Clubs (over Real Madrid by 2-0 twice) and the basis of that team was the same featured here.
According to the date and place shown in this pennant, Ecuador, 28 May 1965, Peñarol was then on tour in that country and played 7 matches losing only one as follow:
    - 13-5-65 - Peñarol: 1 (Goal: Obdulio Aguirre) - Juventud Italiana de Manta: 1
    - 16-5-65 - Peñarol: 4 (Goals: Juan Joya, Nelson Flores, Luis Alberto Fontora (x2) - Emelec de Quito: 1
    - 19-5-65 - Barcelona de Guayaquil: 1 - Peñarol: 0
    - 22-5-65 - Peñarol: 3 (Goals: Nelson Flores, Alberto Spencer, Luis Alberto Fontora) - Nueve de Octubre: 2
    - 24-5-65 - Peñarol: 4 (Goals: Ernesto Ledesma, Alberto Spencer, Juan Joya, Luis Alberto Fontora) - Liga Deportiva Universitaria (LDU): 2
    - 26-5-65 - Peñarol: 1 (Goal: Luis Alberto Fontora) - Liga Deportiva Universitaria (LDU): 0
    - 30-5-65 - Peñarol: 3 (Goals: Enrique Alfano, Alberto Spencer, Juan Joya) - Juventud Italiana de Manta: 0
The pennant is boldly signed in pen ink by the full team as follow:
Luis Gutiérrez, Eduardo García, Juan Vicente Lezcano, Carlos Pérez, Luis Varela, Nelson Díaz, Pablo Forlán, Ruben Soria, Ruben Dávila, Ernesto Ledesma, Obdulio Aguirre, Nelson Flores, Juan Joya, Luis Alberto Fontora, Alberto Spencer, Enrique Alfano, Jesús Villalba, C. Melgar (team masseur), Roque Gastón Máspoli (team D.T.) and 4 others we can't identify.
    It measures 15 cm x 21.5 cm (6" x 8" 5/8).
Condition: Overall very good. Yellow color print nod faded though there are a few minor (normal) cracks mostly at bottom area, not affecting signatures.
Provenance: We acquired this item along with other soccer related items that we'll offer shortly on eBay from Peñarol goalkeeper Luis Gutierrez's son. Guaranted original and as described for life. Item comes with certificate of authenticity.
