Description
Huge, Stunning Gouda Plazuid Holland Charger, "Dora" Floral Design, c. 1928–1932This very large and attractive charger/wall plate was designed--and most likely painted--by Franciscus Ijsselstein at the Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland (PZH) works in Gouda, Holland.
The design features a very colorful and appealing floral design, painted on an off-white ground, surrounded with the familiar Gouda wavy Art Nouveau border in brown. The scalloped edge of the plate is lined in olive green. The decoration is unusually fine on this example, with a nice painterly effect.
Dimensions: 16-3/4" in diameter x 2" high; the base is 8-1/4" in diameter.
This is in excellent original condition, with no chips, cracks or other damage. It is totally uncrazed.
Marked on the bottom with the Gouda "little house" and "5110/40 / DORA / PLAZUID / GOUDA / HOLLAND". The letters "ICA" are incised in the glaze on the bottom (probably a finisher's mark).
This is undated (that I can decipher), but it's easy enough to date between 1928 and 1932 from the use of "PLAZUID" (post-1928) and the absence of "ROYAL" or "KONINKLIJK" (pre-1932).
Note: I'm listing four Gouda wall plates from my collection (shown in the last two photos). Please see my "Other Items" for the other pieces.
